Spain: data to drive mobile growth from US$4 billion in 2009 to US$8 billion in 2014

[teleclick] Spain’s telecom market will continue to surge ahead over the next five years, despite the global economic slowdown, according to a recent report by Pyramid Research.

Mobile data revenues will contribute significantly to this trend, and are expected to double within five years, growing from US$4.1 billion in 2009 to US$8.3 billion in 2014, says Pyramid analyst, Stela Bokun. The mobile data market (which includes wireless email, internet, and messaging) is expected to account for 28% of Spanish telecom spending by 2014, up from 15% this year.

Spanish wireless carriers are already competing fiercely for dominance in mobile data, Bokun says, noting that Vodafone currently offers two months of free service to new mobile broadband subscribers. Rival carrier, Orange, meanwhile, is offering a 60% discount on the first three months of service.
