USA: Legislator calls for investigation on mobile marketplace, noting high SMS prices

[yahoo] "I am concerned that the concentrated nature of the cell phone marketplace could lead to future price increases for this and other cell phone services relied upon by millions of Americans," Herb Kohl, a Wisconsin Democrat, wrote in a Monday letter to FCC chairman Julius Genachowski and Christine Varney, assistant attorney general.

Kohl first took aim at the cell phone industry last year when he penned a letter to the major carriers asking why their individual text message rates had doubled in the last several years – a letter that prompted several class-action suits alleging price fixing.

Verizon and AT&T appeared before Kohl's subcommittee last month and denied that they had colluded to increase text message pricing. They insisted that text-by-text pricing plans are such a marginal part of their businesses that any attempt to do so would be totally counterproductive.
