“Unlimited” phone broadband user receives £11,000 phone bill

An executive couple have received a £11,000 bill after downloading four episodes of the TV show Friends on their mobile phone.
The wife of the couple began downloading episodes of the programme using her husband’s phone - part of an “unlimited” Vodafone phone broadband package which allowed free downloads in the UK. However, although the download had started at home, the remaining parts of the show finished downloading in Germany, after the husband took the phone on his business trip. Foreign download rates of £4.25 per megabyte meant that the 2,600MB downloads created a hefty bill of £11,050.
Ed Richards, the chief executive of Ofcom has confirmed that the watchdog will be investigating the fee. However, a spokesperson for Vodafone said that customers were informed of all charges if they exceeded their quota of downloads, and the businessman would have been aware of the bill as soon as he arrived back in Britain.
