AEC postpones number portability deadline to 30 September
Macedonia’s telecoms regulator the Macedonian Agency for Electronic Communications (AEC), has postponed the implementation of mobile number portability (MNP) and set 30 September as the new deadline. The new regime was supposed to take effect from today, but was thrown into question after the country’s two largest cellcos – T-Mobile and Cosmofon – reportedly moved to postpone its adoption. Despite the latest setback, the AEC remains bullish, saying that the new deadline would not prevent it from dispensing fines to operators which had refused to upgrade their databases to make MNP possible, by 16 July. Local newspaper Vreme writes that the watchdog intends to fine them between 4% and 7% of their annual revenues for their non-compliance. To date, only VIP Mobile, the country’s smallest operator, has endorsed the proposals and confirmed that it is ready to offer the service from today.
