Australia - rural broadband

Government invites submissions for rural broadband plans

The Australian government has requested submissions on how the National Broadband Network (NBN) should be delivered to regional outlying areas. Approximately 2% of the country is not expected to be covered by the fibre-based NBN. Telstra and Optus are among those which have made submissions, and these will be considered by the Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committee, separately from the NBN. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Telstra currently dominates the broadband market in Australia, claiming 54.38% of the market at March 2008.
