, the giant Chinese mobile operator, announced that 2,300 of its base stations have shut down due to lack of electricity after the massive earthquake hit Southwest China yesterday afternoon.
China Unicom<600050><762>, the second largest mobile telecom operator in the country, said 200 base stations nearly the heavily-hit Sichuan Wenchuan have shut down as a result of the earthquake.
Fixed-line operator China Telecom<728> reported normal network performance in general, apart from the network operations in the areas near the epicenter of the earthquake which have been severely affected.
