China - earthquake outage

China Unicom Kicks off National Emergency Telecom System

GSM and CDMA networks of China Unicom in Wenchuan, Sichuan province, the second largest mobile telecom carrier in China, had been broken off by the earthquake occurred on May 12.

More than 200 base stations of China Unicom at the area had been damaged by the earthquake. China Unicom has kicked off the national emergency telecom system. China Unicom gathered emergency telecom vehicles from its branches in the adjacent provinces and sent them to disaster areas.

Besides counties in the epidemic areas in Sichuan, telecom in four counties in Gansu province was also cut off by the earthquake. At the moment, the backbone telecom network o of China Unicom is in normal operation. And the long distance telecom business has not been affected.
