Solomon Islands - Liberalisation has improved availability and coverage of mobile telecoms

[solomon times] The Central Bank of Solomon Islands Annual Report 2010 says the liberalization of the country's telecommunications industry in 2009 has greatly improved general availability and coverage of telecommunications services in the country.

The report says the entry of a second telecommunications provider in 2010 has led to an increased level and improved quality of telecommunications in the country.

It says the cost of telecommunications services has declined with the additional 65% increase in network coverage by Bemobile.

It says about 60,000 subscribers have been established since the company entered the market, employing a large labor force through direct employment, dealers and sub-dealers throughout the country.

However it says despite the new competition, Our Telekom continued with new investments in 2010 with the number of new sites increasing from 30 in 2009 to 32 by the end of 2010.

The Bank reports Our Telekom invested in expanding internet capacity via satellite connection in 2010.

The CBSI 2010 report adds in 2011, both companies are looking to build additional towers to widen mobile connection which would have positive spin offs to the overall economy.
