India - intercepting Blackberry

India has no plans to shut down Blackberry services

Telecoms Secretary Siddhartha Behura has stated that the government does not see RIM’s Blackberry service as a threat and they have no plans to shut it down.

The security agencies on the other hand have been claiming that the encrypted service can be used by anti-national bodies to deliver messages from one place to another.

Behura said: “There is no threat from BlackBerry services. Anybody can start services, that is between the operators and RIM to decide as to start or not.”

Tata Teleservices is one of the telecom players in the market which claims that their application to start Blackberry services was rejected by the government on security grounds.

The security agencies are demanding that they should be allowed to intercept the messages on the Blackberry network.
