China: China Mobile will spend $10 billions to extend GSM coverage in rural areas

[cellular news] ­China Mobile plans to invest RMB 70 billion (US$10.24 billion) over the next three years to expand in its network in rural areas, said company Vice President Li Zhengmao. The company has spend RMB19.5 billion over past five years expanding its network to 60,000 villages.

The coverage will be limited to GSM based services, and will cover 10,000 additional villages and set up 100,000 rural information service stations.

Wang Jianzhou, president of the carrier, earlier said that the company aims to grow by expanding its mobile phone businesses in the country's rural areas.
