[medianama] Everybody say Yippee! According to a report from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the country has finally (finally, finally, finally) crossed the 10 million broadband connection mark. The total broadband connection base in India grew to 10.08 million, up 3.17% from August 2010, when the country reported 9.77 million broadband connections.
However, India does have more Internet connections: at the end of June 2010, there were 16.72 million dialup connections in the country. Also, we’re not sure if TRAI takes USB data card connections into account. A part of the reason behind India’s slow growth in broadband base is the lack of unbundling of the (wireline) last mile: government owned BSNL holds 73.96% of the wireline marketshare, while MTNL has 9.71%. In the meantime, the wireline connection base keeps declining month after month.
Things are still peachy on the wireless side: India added 18.18 million mobile subscribers, taking the total to 670.6 million connections. By the end of August 2010, the total telephone (wireless + wireline) subscriber base in India reached 706.37 million, tele-density of India at 59.63.
