[cellular] South Africa's Sentech is reported to be planning a second attempt at building a nationwide wireless network after its earlier MyWireless project was closed down last November. Sentech chairman Quraysh Patel told local publication, Techcentral that the company is drawing up a business plan that will probably result in it spending about R2bn rolling out a national network based on WiMAX technology.
The company has come under pressure to relinquish its 2.6GHz and 3.5GHz spectrum bands if it doesn't make use of the radio spectrum.
Although the network will initially be based on WiMAX it is being planned in such a way as to allow a migration to LTE services in the future.
The network will largely focus on rural areas that the company says is underserved by the incumbent telecoms networks. The company will avoid providing a retail service, which is puts down to the experience of its MyWireless service.
Sentech is a state-owned signal distributor for the South African broadcasting industry.
