Hong Kong SAR: auctioning extra spectrum for 3G in 1800 MHz band

[OFTA] The Office of the Telecommunications Authority is inviting applications from mobile network operators to bid for radio spectrum in the 1800MHz band in June.

The number of mobile subscribers has reached 11.43 million. The auction for 4.8MHz x 2 of radio spectrum in the 1800MHz band is to cope with demand for more mobile services.

As the available radio spectrum is insufficient for a new entrant to build a network to compete with existing mobile network operators in capacity, coverage or quality of service, the authority decided to assign the radio spectrum to existing operators only.
