Kenya: 17 cellphones were seized in a maximum security prison

[standard] Seventeen mobile phones were seized from inmates at the Kamiti Maximum Prison. Prisoners have reportedly been using the gadgets to con the public.

Prisons Commander Joshua Maweu said most of the gadgets were sneaked in by some prisoners who had been in courts for mentions and hearings.

"They are sneaked here through crude means but we are making efforts to stop the crime once and for all," he said.

The crackdown was conducted following an expose by The Standard’s CCI magazine that showed some prisoners at the institution still use mobile phones to con the public.

Maweu said they would install mobile phone jamming devices within the prison to bar usage of the gadgets.
