Prisons: New Zealand is working to improve blocking technologies for the new 3G network

[stuff] Prison authorities are trying to improve cellphone blocking systems after inmates found they could use phones on Telecom's new network.

Mobile phone use is banned inside prisons, but the arrival of Telecom's new XT network allowed inmates to beat the system, the Herald on Sunday reported.

Several inmates had switched from Vodafone to Telecom shortly before the May 29 launch of the XT network, it reported.

A Department of Corrections spokesman said it needed to address the problem, working alongside Telecom.

"As Telecom updates its technology over time, Corrections will in turn update its blocking systems."
