[daily monitor] The Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC) disclosed that it was working on mobile phone upgrading project as of March 2009 in a bid to centralize the mobile network service that was formerly rendered separately by different companies and improve the overall quality of the service in the capital.
In a statement sent to The Daily Monitor, the corporation indicated that the previous mobile network capacity which was less than one million would grow to 2.5 million as a result the new expansion project.
"This network expansion project incorporates the work of segregating the previous network service with the improved ones," the statement said adding "this operation, however, created temporary inconveniency on the quality of the service".
According to the statement, the corporation is currently undertaking its operation, especially in Addis Ababa, to finalize the optimization of the network and upgrading its efficiency in a short period of time in which over 80 % of the network segregation work was already completed.
It further hinted that the optimization work which was being carried out in some 400 stations in Addis Ababa is expected to be completed within few weeks.
The corporation anticipated that quality related inconveniencies, including poor voice quality, call termination or flouting, noise interference and other problems would be resolved up on completion of the project.
Alongside the efforts in segregation and optimization, in order to sustain its services during times of power supply shortage in Addis Ababa, the corporation accomplished planting generators at 150 of its stations, said the statement adding the corporation has also plans to intensify similar installation at the rest of its stations.
