240 million broadband subs in Asia by 2011
Market research company Ovum has forecast that broadband subscribers in Asia-Pacific will be over 240 million by the end of 2011.
The new study, an independent assessment of broadband deployments and service drivers in 14 countries in APAC, including Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand and Thailand, was conducted by Ovum and the APAC FTTH Council.
The study examined the prospects for FTTP around subscriber growth in the region, FTTP deployment activities and deployment variations, regulatory issues impacting FTTP and broadband growth in general, as well as service drivers that might necessitate the need for FTTP over other forms of broadband access like DSL, cable modem, or wireless.
“APAC has over 80 per cent of the worldwide FTTx deployments. Many operators indicated that content services were going to be a key component of their offerings. However, there are vast differences as to how each country regulates IPTV and content delivery over telecom infrastructures,” said Lynn Hutcheson, VP of communication components at Ovum RHK.
