Telco's roaming holiday
VODAFONE Australia says roaming charges for travellers using laptops overseas will be slashed by up to 80 per cent with the launch of new data roaming plans.
The telco said it had tapped into its international network to offer the internet deals to customers and hinted that roaming charges for mobile phones on its network would also decrease in the lead-up to the Beijing Olympics.
Customers who sign up to the telco's $39, five gigabit a month mobile data plan are eligible for the new overseas "data bundles".
The two roaming plans range in price from $49 a month for 25 megabits (MB) of internet use overseas to $199 a month, which entitles the user to 120MB.
Customers will be able to take their laptops overseas to 38 countries -- including China, the US, Britain, New Zealand -- and get online without having to find a connection in a hotel or internet cafe.
Joseph Ferrar, Vodafone Australia's products manager for international data roaming suggested the telco would soon overhaul mobile phone roaming charges.
"We can't reveal anything at the moment but this is a big year for Vodafone in terms of roaming and we are really going to look at reshaping the roaming proposition in the future," he said.
