Nigeria - Globacom

NCC Lifts Ban On Glo's N6bn Promo

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has lifted the ban on promotional activities placed on Globacom.

The NCC which lifted the ban a few days ago in a statement disclosed that it was lifting the ban following an improvement in Glo's congestion levels.

The NCC stated that it has "carefully reviewed Glo's appeal particularly the factors responsible for the poor quality of service on Glo's network in Kaduna , Kano and Bauchi States in February, 2008.

It added that Glo's commitment and confirmation of the resolution of the identified problems in the above mentioned locations with a view to improving quality of service across it's network was instrumental to the lifting of the ban.

The commission however reiterated that the lifting of the ban is subject to Globacom maintaining good and acceptable quality of service on its network. It also stressed that Glo's national average of the TCH Congestion level on it's network must not be more than 5 percent.

The NCC added that Globacom must submit for review and approval proposals for any further promotional activities to be embarked upon within the next ninety days and there after that may result in increase in the number of call's on Glo's network.

It will be recalled that the NCC had in July last year placed a blanket ban on promotional activities by the three major operators, MTN, Globacom and Celtel due to the poor quality of service from their networks.

The Commission however in October of the same year lifted the ban on Globacom, allowing it to continue its promos due to improvements on its quality of service parameters.

But after a few months, precisely in February this year, the NCC again placed another blanket ban on all operators including Glo, citing continued poor service quality. It also included Globacom in ban, alleging dwindling service parameters in the Kano , Kaduna and Bauchi operations of Globacom.

THISDAY investigations revealed that Glo disputed the congestions testing done on these three Northern operations leading to another test being done. The findings of the new testing showed an improvement in Globacoms congestion levels thus leading to the NCC lifting the ban on Globacom, though all other operators remain barred.

Globacom before the ban in February was running a 500 cars promo worth 2billion naira in which 500 cars were to be given to 500 lucky winners in 5 months. Globacom which began the promo in December had to put the promo on hold following the ban. But with the lifting of the ban, the promo which was to have been concluded in May will now be revived. The promotion known as Win and Rule will put 500 new cars including 200 Kia Rio cars, 150 Nissan Sunny, 100 Peugeot 307, 38 BMW 3 Series and 12 Mercedes Benz S350 Class in the hands of both old and new subscribers on the prepaid and postpaid platforms.
