Mobile Suica users pass million mark

East Japan Railway Co (JR East) said Saturday that the number of users of its Mobile Suica service passed one million on April 16. JR East achieved the milestone about 14 months later than planned. The service allows users to pay rail fares and shop via their mobile phones.

In the first year since the service started in late January of 2006, its users totaled only 290,000, against the company’s target of one million. The number of Mobile Suica users grew after increases in credit cards that can be used for its membership registration and the start last month of a service expanding its use for bullet train rides.
