Telecommunication promulgation confirmed
The interim Government has confirmed the new Telecommunication Promulgation 2008 will commence on August 1, 2008.
Interim Minister for Trade and Communications, Tom Ricketts said for some years now the ministry has been working to build a telecom industry built on competition and this now will be a reality.
The promulgation will usher in the new Telecommunication Regulator and expand the role of the Commerce Commission on Telecommunication matters.
The Telecommunication Industry of Fiji (Telecom Fiji Ltd, FINTEL and Vodafone Fiji Ltd, in particular) have been strong supporters of this program which culminates on August 1.
Mr Ricketts said this coincides with the first Industry Consultation Workshop on Licensing of Competitive Suppliers of Telecom Services and is the start of an ongoing program of consultations to develop and refine the new competitive era.
