Nigeria: House of Representatives supports Globacom's bid to acquire NITEL

[daily independent] The House of Representatives Committee on Information and Communications has said that it will back Globacom's bid to acquire Nigeria Telecommunications Limited (Nitel).

Members of the committee who spoke during a facility tour of Globacom on Tuesday stated that the company had the technical competence and human resource to turn around the fortunes of the ailing first national operator.

They noted that Globacom had performed beyond expectation and had made every Nigerian proud. They argued that the Nigerian company should be given a chance to salvage what was left of the once thriving national operator.

Patrick Ikhariale, a member of the committee and also Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Justice stated: "Glo has shown it has the capacity and technology in bringing accelerated development in Nigeria's telecommunication industry.

"This is evident from the success it has recorded in the last six years and making possible what other telecom companies said was not possible. I am sure that if given a chance, the company will replicate its success story with Nitel."

Jerry Emanwe from Taraba State who spoke in the same vein, noted that Nitel had become a sore point in the economic history of Nigeria.

"We encourage you to bid for Nitel. Be the first National Carrier instead of Second National Operator. We the legislators will support you in this direction," he observed

Also speaking on the issue, another member of the committee, Chinwendu Odedo, said: "You are the first in many things. You are truly the first and not the second national carrier. Mike Adenuga and the Globacom team have shown the world that Nigerians
