[telecom insight] Italy's principal telecoms network operators agreed to create a jointly-owned company that will build a dedicated national next generation network (NGN) based on high-speed fibre-optic cables. Surprisingly, the group has been joined by incumbent Telecom Italia, which has previously resisted the notion of sacrificing its status as the dominant provider of last-mile access and long-distance broadband connections.
