Nigeria: GSM Qos - Minister, Reps Disagree
The 2nd Public Forum on Quality of Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) Service Challenges opened in Abuja yesterday with the Committee of the House of Representative on Telecommunication and the Minister of State for Information and Communications, Alh. Nakande Dasuki flatly disagreeing on whether there has been any improvement in service quality since the first forum took place June, last year.
While, the Deputy Chairman of the Reps Committee, Hon. Folake Oshinowo, who stood for the Committee mounted the rostrum and rebuked GSM operators for little or no improvement in the quality of service, Dasuki in turn, rejected her submission, saying their has been tremendous improvement, and went on to praise the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) and GSM operators for the effort.
Oshinowo, speaking extempore, observed that, "I am sorry to note that after we have made so much effort in the National Assembly since last year to see that Nigerian subscribers get the worth of their money, it is unfortunate that there has been very little or no improvement in the service quality till now", she said. "But, we are not going to stop. We are going to do our best within the confine of our mandate to see that these operators improve on their services. I want to assure Nigerians about that", she said. She however thanked the NCC for creating the forum and said she hoped it would create its desired impact. As she made for her seat, there was no applause. Shortly after it was the Minister's turn to talk. "Contrary to the submission by the Vice Chairman of the Reps Committee on Communication, I think there has been tremendous improvement in the quality of service these days. The situation has greatly changed.
I am not saying that everything is now perfect, but honestly, the operators have done much in improving the quality of their services and I want to congratulate them and the NCC for the good job", he said as the hall came alive with applause.
"This forum should serve as a platform to sustain this achievement", he said.
