Bahrain - 400,000 mobile phones suspended for not being registered

[cellular news] Around 400,000 SIM cards were disconnected overnight in Bahrain as the deadline for registering PrePay subscribers passed. The country's three mobile networks, Batelco, Viva and Zain had stepped up their campaigns to encourage SIM card holders to register their ownership before the 31st August deadline.

"As per the warning of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) and with the due consent from Batelco, Zain and Viva, there will be no extension for the registration of the prepaid mobile lines," an official at the Kingdom's watchdog confirmed to the Bahrain Tribune, cited by ITP.

Although now suspended, unregistered prepaid mobile subscribers still have until 26th September 2010 to register and complete their personal details, after which the unregistered mobile lines will be disconnected.

TRA Chairman and Acting General Director Dr. Mohammed Al Amer had previously said "We have taken this step to support the public safety and discourage illegitimate use of the mobile telecommunications networks."
