[apa news] Zimbabwe’s telecommunications regulator, Posts and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ), has indefinitely extended an exercise to register mobile phone users after telephone subscribers failed to meet an initial August 31 deadline.
Mobile phone users in Zimbabwe are required to register their lines with service providers for security purposes as well as to assist in combating crime.
POTRAZ had earlier given mobile phone users up to Tuesday to register activated lines with the country’s three cellular providers but was forced to extend the exercise following a last-minute rush to register.
It said registration of lines would increase security for users, combat criminal activity and abuse of mobile phones.
Registering lines would reduce transmission of messages or calls that are offensive, obscene or threatening in nature.
The registration of cell phone lines is not unique to Zimbabwe but has become a requirement all over the world, with South Africa and Kenya having implemented similar policies in recent years.
