Public safety agencies: Demand for fast, resilient communications, with TETRA remaining an important technology

[PRNewswire] Motorola, Inc., today unveils its "Future Tech" research into the future requirements that Europe's public safety agencies and major industrial users have for their communications systems. Analysis from interviews with 196 organizations, reveals the clear demand, expressed by 82 percent of respondents for fast, resilient communications, which improve the safety of users, extend the range of applications available in the field and simplify ease of use. These requirements underline the ongoing importance of TETRA technology.

The in-depth study, conducted by IDC on Motorola's behalf, canvassed the opinions of executives with a role in purchasing decisions across eight countries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA)* from public safety, oil and gas and transport sectors. As well as articulating the overwhelming demand for faster and more resilient communication networks, organizations, as reported by 79 percent of respondents, are keen to see improvements to technology which improves existing systems.

"Organizations are focused on optimizing their existing communications systems to support accelerated data speeds and advanced applications. For instance, 66 percent would like to see technology support the delivery of more information to field teams, while 61 percent demand that technology improves situational analysis - the facility to access video feeds or remote databases and file reports in the field, or even to access images and video feeds comes into this category," said Pim Bilderbeek, VP European Telecoms Consulting, IDC. "Also, 61 percent of organizations identify the need for GPS/mapping technologies; these applications are very important to enhancing the safety of field teams and the interest in them adds further weight to the strong consensus (indicated by 74 percent of the respondents) that safeguarding teams is central to investing in communications systems."

Public safety and industrial organizations are investing in TETRA networks to manage their communications. TETRA provides dedicated private networks which deliver exceptional reliability, interoperability (in a crisis situation teams from different organizations can be connected), are highly secure, and support both voice and data connectivity. The technology is evolving to address the customer expectations revealed by the research and extend the long-term returns of investments in TETRA.

For instance, GPS tracking is widely deployed to protect teams and we're working to further advance emergency features. The industry is also enhancing network performance with the imminent availability of TETRA 2 technology, expanding the array of services available to users, said Manuel Torres, vice president and general manager, Government Business, Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions, EMEA.

TETRA Release 2 includes TETRA Enhanced Data Services (TEDS) for higher data rates, a technology which is already being deployed in Norway's nationwide TETRA system, with more networks planning to invest in the technology over the next two years. At the TETRA World Congress (27-29 May, Munich), Motorola will demonstrate how accelerated data rates can be applied to support innovative applications such as video. Video has the potential to support a wide range of field services: Engineers can send a video of a damaged equipment back to the office to ask for guidance on fixing the problem, or, police officers can be sent video images of suspects or missing persons to aid investigations.

The research also revealed that 44 percent of organizations believe that technology must easily connect teams working in high-pressure environments with the information and communications they need to successfully and safely complete tasks.

Recognizing this requirement, Motorola's design team spends unprecedented time with working alongside end users in the field across the world. This research has led to the company's commitment to "Design for Use," a philosophy which ensures products are operated with second-nature ease. As part of its ongoing customer dialogue, the company has just finalized a year-long study into the device requirements of end users.

Interviews were carried out via telephone in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain and the United Kingdom. The questionnaire was generated by IDC analysts. Organizations were included from the following arenas: Public Safety - Police, Fire, Ambulance, Emergency Services; Transportation - Bus, Train, Tram, Metro, Airports, Harbours; and Oil/Gas - Extraction, Production, and Distribution of Oil, Gas, Electricity, and Water.
