Jersey - One quarter of homes to have access to 20 Mbps broadband

[computing] As part of a £11m next-generation network (NGN) investment in new fibre connections, the Jersey Telecom Group (JTG) has announced that by the end of December, 25 per cent of Jersey households will be able to achieve download speeds of up to 20Mbit/s, rather than the current 8Mbit/s.

This faster service is being made available to customers of the group’s retail division, and will also be provided to wholesale partners Sure and Newtel, who provide broadband to the island.

Meanwhile, JTG’s broadband partner in Guernsey, Wave, is also extending its fibre optic cabling network to allow more business customers to benefit from its 10Gbit/s service.

Wave is also upgrading its Super Fast Mobile Broadband network, doubling its speed from 7.2Mbit/s to 14.4Mbit/s by the end of the year. This will provide customers with broadband access that is three times faster than the current speed of consumer fixed lines.

“The biggest threat to us is standing still,” said JTG CEO Graeme Millar.

“By following this strategy there is a huge opportunity for us to make the Channel Islands into a world class telecommunications hub for Europe. We are now well positioned both technically and commercially to make that happen,” he added.
