[act media] Romania has entered the FTTH rankings (Fiber to the Home) occupying the 13th position from 17 eligible European countries, according to a release of the FTTH Council Europe.
The FTTH ranking includes European countries where more than 1 percent of the broadband connections are achieved through fiber-optic. With a penetration rate of 1.58 percent, Romania has reached 120,000 subscribers to fiber-optic services, most of them using the FTTB technology.
Small providers of Internet have installed most of the FTTH/B fiber-optic connection, creating 'block or neighborhood networks.' The largest supplier of fiber-optic services in Romania, RCS & RDS cable company, has gradually replaced the coaxial cable connections with the Ethernet LAN architecture.
Another project that will influence Romania's position in the FTTH ranking is currently under way in Bucharest, where local authorities have started a public-private partnership, a major project to develop the fiber-optic network with open access to residents.
The ranking made by FTTH Council Europe is part of the study 'Market Panorama', conducted by the research firm IDATE. The data obtained in the first half of 2010 show that the new EU member states leads the rankings, occupying three of the top five positions. If Russia would be taken into account too, it could be said that at present most FTTH fiber-optic connections are implemented in Eastern Europe.
