[ahn] Bell Canada announced on Thursday its purchase for $142 million the remaining 50 percent stake of Virgin Mobile Canada, making it 100 percent owner of the discount carrier.
Despite the sale, Virgin Mobile will still run as a separate company, but will tap Bell's wireless network. Virgin phones and plans will be available alongside other Bell products in the same stores including The Source, Bell's latest retail chain purchase.
The buy-in is expected to tighten competition in Canada for the wireless market since aside from Telus and Rogers Communications which are Bell's main rivals, new wireless players are expected to launch new products in the next few months.
