[nasdaq] China plans to boost consumer spending on telecommunications, as part of the government's bid to increase domestic consumption, a person close to China's economic planning agency said Wednesday.
The plan also aims to increase usage of third-generation mobile services, said the person who saw a government document on the plan.
The plan calls for the elimination of roaming fees for mobile-phone users and basic fees for fixed-line phone users, the person, who declined to be named, told Dow Jones Newswires.
He said the measures were included in a document that the National Development and Reform Commission submitted to the State Council, the highest executive body in China.
"It is difficult to say when the measures will be announced" as the State Council will also have to consider opinions from other government departments, he said.
China's major telecom operators are in the process of launching 3G mobile services after a sector restructuring in May last year.
