Europe: EC Decision to harmonise use of 60 GHz, offering opportunities for high-speed wireless connections for consumer electronics

[ec] Commission Decision 2006/771/EC – IP/06/1808 to make more harmonised frequency bands available, expands the scope of the original Decision on various short-range devices. A number of allocations for everyday wireless devices are added to the already harmonised frequency bands for devices such as garage door openers, wireless alarms, baby monitors, head phones and microphones. Besides adding harmonised frequency bands for existing applications, the Commission Decision also offers a harmonised spectrum environment for innovative high data rate, high-speed wireless technologies. Such multi-gigabit wireless technologies can be applied in many different consumer electronics products.

Being able to use the same short range wireless product anywhere in the EU will make life simpler for everyone, manufacturers can make one product for the whole internal market. For consumers this could mean lower prices. The Commission Decision is prepared
