Ghana: MTN has launched 3.5G services using HSDPA

[itp] MTN has launched 3.5G services in Ghana using high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) technology.

The development will pitch MTN against rival Zain, which launched its 3.5 service in December 2008. Both operators will also soon face competition from Globacom, which bought a 3G licence for Ghana in mid-2008, and is expected to start services soon.

Incumbent operator Ghana Telecom is also expected to launch 3G services in the coming months after it signed a $120 million contract with Huawei Technologies to upgrade its 2G network to 3G, in January.
