South Korea - Regulator has selected ten future services it will assist incluidng 4G broadcasting, DMB and McS

[joongangdaily] The Korea Communications Commission yesterday selected 10 future telecommunication services that it will help develop, including 4G broadcasting, touch digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) and a mobile convergence service (McS).

The KCC, the nation’s top telecommunication agency, said the selected technologies are expected to attract large investments due to their market potential.

All of the technologies reflect characteristics of being “ubiquitous, smart, lifelike, green and trustworthy.”

The 4G, or fourth generation, broadcasting service, which heads the list of future services, is an advancement on 3-D television using ultra-high definition television technologies. According to the KCC, the 4G broadcasting service will provide enhanced visual and audio appeal.

The KCC plans to start a pilot 4G broadcasting service in 2013 at the ultra-high resolution of 3840 x 2160.

Touch DMB is twice as vivid as current services and will provide 3-D video. Using WiBro, or wireless broadband, it will be able to engage in two-way broadcasting. The KCC plans to commercialize it starting in 2016.

McS enables the same handset to access the Internet either through a fixed network or a wireless network.

Other future services include a so-called “object-to-object network” that allows various vehicles on the road to be equipped with sensor and telecommunications functions to create an integrated transport information system.

The “future internet” project will provide Internet service at speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second. The service will be tested in 2016 under the KCC plan.

“K-Star” is a telecommunication satellite that will provide 3-D TV service. KCC aims to develop the first K-Star by 2016.

The “smart-screen service” project will allow users to enjoy games and other software and content around the clock using a desktop computer, Internet protocol television or mobile wireless devices.

The “next-wave” service is a medical service using radio waves. Doctors will be able to diagnose and treat tumors or decayed teeth with the service providing the resolution of magnetic resonance images.

The “cognitive integrated security service” will provide comprehensive security solutions for computer hardware, operating systems, networks and applications.

The “integrated green information and communications technology service” will be used to save energy for the use of telecommunication services.
