China: Ericsson forecasts it will pass 1 billion mobile customers by 2013, up from 640 million at the end of 2008

[digitimes] The number of mobile subscriptions in China is expected to surpass the one-billion-mark by 2013, having reached 641 million in 2008, according to Mats Olsson, president of the Greater China area for Ericsson.

Quoting data released by China's government agencies and carriers, the number of mobile subscriptions in China grew by 93.9 million a year, or a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20%, during the 2003-2008 period, Olsson noted.

Buoyed by the inauguration of the 3G services in China, the number of mobile subscriptions expanded at a rate of 10 million a month in the first two months of this year, said Olsson, who also indicated the mobile subscription in the 3G segment alone is likely to grow over 100% a year over the next few years.

Meanwhile, the number of mobile users in China reached 750 million at the end of 2008, Olsson noted.
