Taiwan: Minister rejects purchase of 12% of a Far EasTone Telecom by China Mobile

[bloomberg] Taiwan’s economics minister said the island won’t open the telecommunications to Chinese investors yet, less than two weeks after China Mobile Ltd. announced the purchase of a stake in Far EasTone Telecommunications Ltd.

Beijing-based China Mobile said last month it will buy 12 percent in Taiwan’s third-largest phone company, the first investment by a mainland state-owned company in the island since a civil war ended six decades ago.

In the short-term, the China Mobile deal is unlikely to happen, because of all the political considerations,” said Robyn Hsu, who helps manage $3 billion funds at Capital Investment Trust Corp. in Taipei. “However, Chinese investment is a trend. You can’t ban it forever. It’s a matter of time.”
