[going LTE] The spectrum auction in the 2.6GHz spectrum netted EUR2.6 million for the Dutch government. Five operators earned licenses for 4G services.
Zesko Holding (Ziggo), Tele2,Versatel, KPN, Vodaphone and T-Mobile have two years to set up networks according to the Dutch telecommunications agency OPTA. The licenses are good until 2030. It is believed that the operators will provide 4G services such as TV broadcasting, high speed wireless internet and online gaming.
The Dutch government limited a maximum of 55MHz spectrum per operator. KPN and Vodaphone were granted 20MHz each. T-Mobile acquired 10MHz. The two new players to the Netherlands wireless operators, Ziggo and Tele2 each got 40MHz of spectrum. The 3G spectrum auction netted 3 billion euro a decade ago, but this one didn’t net as much.
KPN leads the Dutch wireless communications market with a 52 percent, followed by Vodafone and T-Mobile. The spectrum will most likely launch LTE in the Netherlands. Deutsche Telekom, parent company of T-Mobile, seems the most poised to launch the LTE network first. They’ve spent money exploring the possibility of deploying a network in the U.S. Vodafone will probably be next because they have the capital to invest in both the network development and the release of LTE-enabled devices and CPEs.
