[All Africa] Mobile operator Telecel is to release about 100 000 new lines on the market this week, an official said on Monday.
Public relations officer Monica Malunda told New Ziana the release would increase subscriber base to about 350 000. Currently, Econet commands the largest percentage share of subscriber base at 60 percent, followed by NetOne.
However, NetOne has the widest network coverage. Malunda said Telecel was releasing additional lines following a network upgrading exercise carried out by the operator six weeks ago to expand capacity.
"This exercise has been completed successfully and has resulted in the availability of 100 000 lines," she said. Malunda said the upgrading work was being carried out in two phases, with the second one expected to start soon.
The first phase targeted Harare and Bulawayo and saw the operator installing capacity by pulling out selected base stations and replacing them with high capacity equipment.
The second phase would target most highway corridors, service centres and rural areas and would see more lines being released on the market.
