China - China Mobile will build 3 million broadband lines this quarter

[trading markets] China Mobile Ltd. has fixed on its massive expansion into the Chinese fixed-line broadband market, with 3 million lines to be completed in the first quarter of 2010, according to people close to the biggest Chinese mobile operator.

China Mobile started its public bidding for FTTx equipment in December 2009, including both GPON and EPON facilities. In particular, the bidding was supposed to shape the Chinese GPON market, luring the mainstream providers like Alcatel-Lucent, Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., ZTE Corporation, and Motorola Inc..

In the past two years, China Mobile had carried out its fixed-line broadband trial run in more than 20 Chinese provinces, where most of its branches have shown their optimism about the GPON standard.

In addition, China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. is building an 11.3-million-line EPON, and the equipment providers also include Huawei and ZTE.
